Why should we be wearing Russian Hats?

The Russian hat is an iconic style of men's head wear with it's characteristic furry ear flaps, recognised both as a practical winter accessory and as a statement hat. Known to many as the trapper, it has gained a massive following from the attention it received on the 07/08 catwalk and has made a massive impact again on Winter 08/09 catwalks from the very highest high fashion collections right down to the high street.

Originally the Russian hat was worn by the Russia military, due to it being traditionally made from sheepskin, Muskrat or Rabbit fur. The fur construction gave the hat its warm practical feature. However now, the 'Ushanka', which is more commonly used in Russia (Literally translates to 'ear-flaps hat') has transcended internationally and has utilised the advances and choice of 'Fish-Fur' fabrics: Synthetic, Wool, Cotton etc.

Not only has the structure of the hat changed but the style has been mirrored all over the world or inspired other styles of hat due to its design features. The fur trim, Cossack or ear-flaps and neck brace gives protection against the elements. For this reason the Russian hat style is known by numerous names depending on where in the world it is and what is used for: Russian, Trapper, Ushanka, Shapka, Boris, Cossack Flaps, Hunter and Deer Stalker are all names that correspond to a hat with ear-covers.

The Trapper hat is probably the most popular alternative term used for the Russian hat, instead of being used traditionally for the police, the Trapper is associated with hunting and outdoor lifestyle in places such as America. However, whatever the name and country or origin, this style of hat has now well and truly entered the fashion world, seen on the catwalks of D-Squared, Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci, the Russian style hat is a design of head wear that has been embraced for the winter seasons.

Matched with a big Trench style coat or even the old school Parker, Bomber jacket or Mack, the Trapper Russian hat no doubt now manages to epitomise masculinity and style. If anyone is looking for a hat for the winter which will protect you from the elements whilst making the ultimate winter statement then the Russian hat is for you. It is iconic in many ways and, is clearly here to stay within the everyday casual men's clothing world; if there is a statement winter piece to be had, we reckon this is definitely it.
